As of 7 November 2026, taken from the platforms' own pages: KDP ISBN and imprint, KDP Expanded Distribution, Draft2Digital FAQ, Lulu Global Distribution: free ISBN, imprint and fee, Lulu basics: proof copy, B&N Press ISBN FAQ, B&N Press author copies, B&N Press payment currency, Bowker ISBN prices, German ISBN agency prices. The platforms calculate the author's share on different bases (list price minus printing, or net revenue after the trade discount and printing), so their percentages cannot be compared side by side. On the free platforms you publish the book yourself. With ShelfPublisher a publishing house does it for you.
Orbita Media GmbH, an international publishing house with more than 1,000 titles and 2 million books sold, is the publisher of your paperback.
An ISBN from the publisher's own block, registered with complete metadata. Nothing to buy, nothing to fill in.
Listed in the wholesale catalogs that more than 50,000 bookstores in 18 countries order from, Amazon included.
Keep your own KDP edition on Amazon and add a publisher's edition for the bookstore trade.
On every free platform in the table you remain the publisher. The platform prints, lists and pays out, but the book carries your name or the platform's imprint as publisher, and bookstores see it as a self-published title.
With ShelfPublisher, Orbita Media GmbH is the publisher of record. The ISBN comes from the publisher's own block, the metadata is reported by the publisher, and the paperback is listed where bookstores order from publishers they know. That is what the price per book pays for: a publishing house on your book instead of “Independently published”, an ISBN you do not have to buy, and a listing where bookstores order, without a print run or stock.
Recommend ShelfPublisher and earn 10% of the book royalties of the authors you bring, on every statement, with no time limit. Their own royalties stay untouched; you join in the portal.
Publishing every month? A subscription gives you a fixed number of slots each month, cheaper per book than single slots (pricing).
Status, quarterly sales statements, earnings and support tickets for each of your books in one place.
Weekly challenges, a league every season and a goal all authors reach together bring prizes: vouchers and Jokers. You redeem them at checkout as a discount on your next slots; with a subscription new bonuses arrive every week.
Every subscription follows your books on Amazon: sales rank and stars every day, and an alert as soon as a 1- or 2-star review comes in.
On KDP or a comparable self-publishing platform you are the publisher of record and you run the account, the metadata and the distribution settings yourself. With ShelfPublisher a real publishing house is the publisher of record: we issue the ISBN, file the metadata and set the title up with the wholesale channels, and your book is not tied to a retail account of yours.
On a platform, your book is a self-published title that depends on one account, and on Amazon, sales and ratings decide how far it gets. With us it is a publisher's title in the catalogs that more than 50,000 bookstores in 18 countries order from, and no star rating decides whether a store can order it. The page KDP alternative puts both side by side.
It makes a KDP paperback visible to the trade, but bookstores almost never order it: the book stays self-published. KDP offers it to distributors in the US and the UK, from which bookstores and libraries can order, at a lower royalty than on Amazon itself. KDP itself states that enrolling does not guarantee that a distributor accepts the book or that a particular bookseller or library orders it. The book is listed with KDP's imprint or your own, as published through KDP.
With ShelfPublisher the paperback is published by Orbita Media, an international publishing house with more than 1,000 titles, and listed in the wholesale catalogs that more than 50,000 bookstores in 18 countries order from.
No. The publisher decides to publish the book, gives it its ISBN and imprint, pays for production and carries the risk. A distributor or wholesaler makes the finished book available to retailers and libraries and ships it when they order. At ShelfPublisher, Orbita Media is the publisher; the distribution runs through the wholesale channels. More in Amazon KDP vs a traditional publisher.
No. If you use a free platform ISBN, the platform's imprint appears as publisher, for example "Independently published" at KDP. If you buy your own ISBNs, you register yourself or your own imprint name as publisher. With ShelfPublisher the imprint is Orbita Media's. The article What is a publishing imprint? explains the difference.
Check four things: who pays, who selects, who distributes and what the contract says. A traditional publisher never charges you to be published. A service you pay must state its prices and terms openly, before you sign. Ask which wholesalers list its books and check whether its titles can actually be ordered. Read the rights clause: how long, which formats, and how rights come back to you.
ShelfPublisher publishes its prices on the pricing page, its terms at /legal/terms, and the publisher behind it is Orbita Media GmbH, an international publishing house; the company details are in the legal notice. Our article on hybrid publishing vs self-publishing lists the warning signs.
How long does it take to publish a book? Traditional: 2–4 years. Self-publishing: weeks once your files are ready. ISBN and print on demand explained.
