Draft2Digital review 2027: fees, ISBN and print books
Draft2Digital distributes ebooks and print books to many stores from one dashboard. For your paperback, the questions are what it costs you each year, whose ISBN it carries and who actually orders it.
Is Draft2Digital worth it in 2027? Draft2Digital (D2D) is a distributor: you remain the self-publisher, you choose the stores, and you pay a 20 USD activation fee plus 12 USD every year your sales stay under 100 USD. Its free ISBN only works inside D2D, changes to a printed book cost tokens, and D2D itself says print books are not automatically ordered by stores. If what you want is a publishing house behind your paperback, an ISBN included and a listing where bookstores order, ShelfPublisher gives you that without any yearly fee.

What Draft2Digital costs
D2D's FAQ answers the question directly: "For accounts that want to publish, there is a non-refundable, one-time activation fee of $20 (USD) for new accounts and an annual maintenance fee of $12 (USD) for accounts that earn less than one-hundred dollars a year in book sales."
For a first book, which often sells slowly, that means 20 USD to start and 12 USD every year until it earns more than 100 USD a year.
Changing a printed book costs extra. D2D explains that it "incurs a cost for each update you make to your print book" and has introduced Print Change Tokens: "There will be a monetary cost for each Print Change Token, but Draft2Digital will give you a free token 90 days following the publication of your book." Beyond that one free token, every correction after publication has a price.
Whose ISBN and whose name
D2D assigns a free ISBN, with a clear limit: "you can not use a Draft2Digital provided ISBN anywhere outside of Draft2Digital's services." If you ever move the book, the ISBN stays behind. Your own costs 125 USD for one at Bowker.
As publisher, D2D shows the name you enter, or your author name if you leave it blank. You are the self-publisher either way; no publishing house stands behind the title.
With ShelfPublisher, Orbita Media GmbH, an international publishing house with more than 1,000 titles, publishes your paperback, with an ISBN from its own block included.
Will bookstores order a D2D print book?
D2D Print makes your book available to Amazon and other retail channels, and stores can order it. D2D adds a note on its own FAQ: "Your books will not be automatically ordered and placed on shelves in physical locations." It suggests contacting individual bookstores yourself.
