Barnes & Noble Press review 2027: is it worth it?

Is Barnes & Noble Press worth it in 2027? If you live in the US and want your paperback on Barnes & Noble and bn.com, B&N Press is a free way to get there. Its reach is Barnes & Noble: the free ISBN only works for distribution to Barnes & Noble and bn.com, the publisher shown is "Barnes & Noble Press", author copies only ship within the US, and payments go out in USD. If you want a publishing house behind your paperback and a listing where bookstores in 18 countries order, Amazon included, ShelfPublisher is the wider route.

What Barnes & Noble Press costs

Publishing a print book on B&N Press is free, and B&N Press can provide a free ISBN. The costs come in where your book should go beyond Barnes & Noble: an ISBN of your own costs 125 USD for one at Bowker, the US ISBN agency.

The free ISBN and its limits

B&N Press is direct about its ISBN: "This free ISBN can only be used on B&N Press for distribution to Barnes & Noble and bn.com. It cannot be used with another publisher or self-publishing service." On your book's detail page, "The 'Publisher' field on your print book's B&N Press detail page will read 'Barnes & Noble Press.'"

Two more rules matter if your book is already out somewhere else. B&N Press limits free ISBNs to three per week, and an ISBN of your own only works if it has not been used elsewhere: "If your ISBN has been submitted for use at any other retailer, including bn.com, you cannot use that ISBN with Barnes & Noble Press."

Outside the US: author copies and payments

For authors outside the US, two points from the help center:

• Author copies. "B&N Press only ships author copies and personal print book orders within the United States."
• Payments. "As of March 2nd, 2026, for international authors previously paid in GBP or EUR, all payments will now be issued in USD." Your bank converts the amount.
