BookBaby review 2027: pricing, ISBN and where your book sells
BookBaby sells print-on-demand packages, ISBNs and printing runs. Before you buy a package, look at three things: the price, the name that appears as publisher and the two places your printed book is sold.
Is BookBaby worth it in 2027? BookBaby charges 199 USD (BookBaby Bookshop only) or 399 USD (Bookshop plus Amazon) for print-on-demand distribution, plus 79 USD if you take its ISBN, so 278 to 478 USD before your paperback sells a copy. For that, BookBaby is listed as the publisher of your printed book, and the book is sold in two places: Amazon and the BookBaby Bookshop. If you want a publishing house as publisher, the ISBN included and a listing where more than 50,000 bookstores in 18 countries order, ShelfPublisher costs €20 to €35 per book.

What BookBaby costs
BookBaby's print-on-demand page lists two packages: "BookBaby Bookshop™ global direct sales $ 199" and "BookBaby Bookshop™ + Amazon POD $ 399". The ISBN is not part of them: BookBaby sells "a single ISBN at the rate of $79 (each)", or you bring your own, 125 USD for one at Bowker.
Later corrections have a price too. For a printed title already in distribution, BookBaby's support writes: "This service costs $100.00 for printed titles", plus a new copy: "This will cost $99.00 + tax with free domestic ground Shipping." And "changes to your manuscript are limited to spelling."
| Item at BookBaby | Price |
|---|---|
| Print on demand, BookBaby Bookshop only | 199 USD |
| Print on demand, Bookshop plus Amazon | 399 USD |
| BookBaby ISBN | 79 USD each |
| Change after release | 100 USD prepress plus 99 USD plus tax for a copy |
Who the publisher of a BookBaby book is
BookBaby's support center answers this one directly: "BookBaby must be listed as the publisher for all printed books that we distribute." That holds with your own ISBN as well: "Authors can still use their own ISBN number if they choose, but BookBaby must still show as the publisher with the online retailers." Your own company name can appear as imprint.
So you pay for the package, and the publisher retailers see is BookBaby.
With ShelfPublisher, Orbita Media GmbH, an international publishing house with more than 1,000 titles and 2 million books sold, publishes your paperback, ISBN from its own block included.
Where a BookBaby print book is sold
BookBaby says plainly where its printed books go: "your title will be available through Amazon and the BookBaby BookShop." The print page explains why: "'Wide' printed book distribution is not a primary success driver for emerging authors. That's why our program is intentionally focused on these channels." It also notes that inclusion "does not guarantee stocking or purchasing by any specific retailer or wholesaler besides BookBaby."
