Amazon KDP review 2027: is KDP worth it?
KDP is free to upload and puts your book on Amazon. Whether it is worth it depends on one question: do you only want Amazon, or a publisher and bookstores behind your paperback?
Is Amazon KDP worth it in 2027? Yes, if all you want is your book on Amazon and you are fine being its self-publisher: uploading is free and you control the price. If you want more than that, a publisher in the book, an ISBN that is not tied to one platform and a paperback that bookstores order through their wholesale catalogs, KDP does not give you those. A publishing house does. With ShelfPublisher, Orbita Media GmbH publishes your paperback and lists it where more than 50,000 bookstores in 18 countries order, Amazon included.

This review goes through what KDP costs, what it puts in your book and where your book can be sold, with KDP's own wording for every point. The side-by-side table is on Amazon KDP vs ShelfPublisher, and every platform comparison is on Compare platforms.
What KDP costs
Uploading a book to Kindle Direct Publishing costs nothing. The printing cost of each paperback is taken from your royalty when a copy sells. You do not pay for stock or a print run.
What you pay for is everything around the book. A free KDP ISBN is available, but KDP states: "Free ISBNs from us can only be used on KDP." If you want an ISBN under your own publishing name, you buy it yourself: Bowker, the US ISBN agency, charges 125 USD for one and 295 USD for ten.
KDP calculates your royalty on the list price minus printing. A publisher shares the net revenue after the trade discount and printing. Percentages on different bases cannot be compared side by side, which is why you will not find a royalty column in our comparisons.
Who the publisher of your book is
On KDP you are the self-publisher. With the free KDP ISBN, the imprint of your paperback reads "Independently published". That is the first thing a bookseller sees when looking up your book, and it marks the paperback as a self-published title.
With an ISBN of your own you can enter your own imprint name, but you are still the publisher behind it: metadata, rights, legal deposit and every decision stay with you.
Where bookstores can order a KDP paperback
On Amazon, readers can buy your book right away. Outside Amazon, KDP offers Expanded Distribution for paperbacks. It makes your book available to distributors, and KDP spells out what that means: "The decision to list your book lies with distributors and the decision to order your book lies solely with the individual booksellers and libraries."
So Expanded Distribution is an offer to the trade, not a listing as a publisher's title that bookstores know and reorder.
With ShelfPublisher your paperback gets an ISBN from the publisher's own block and is listed in the wholesale catalogs that more than 50,000 bookstores in 18 countries order from, Amazon included.
Who decides whether your book stays on sale
KDP's content guidelines say: "We'll reject or remove content that does not adhere to these guidelines." Amazon also reserves the right to remove books it sees as a poor customer experience. Section 3 of the KDP terms allows Amazon to suspend or terminate an account "at any time if we have concerns with your account". What happens then is set out in our article KDP account terminated.
Your whole catalog sits in one personal account. That is the part of KDP that no author controls.

Is KDP worth it for you?
KDP fits if you want to sell on Amazon only and take on the whole publisher's job yourself. If your goal is a book that carries a publisher's name, sits in the catalogs bookstores order from and does not hang on one account, then the better route is a publishing house behind your paperback.
That is what ShelfPublisher is built for:
- A publisher in your book. Orbita Media GmbH, with more than 1,000 titles and 2 million books sold, publishes your paperback.
- ISBN and metadata included. The ISBN comes from the publisher's own block, and the publisher reports complete metadata.
- Bookstores, not just one shop. Your paperback is listed in the wholesale catalogs that more than 50,000 bookstores in 18 countries order from, Amazon included.
- No proof copy to buy. Our system checks interior and cover, and whenever there is a doubt a person on our team does.
- One price per book. €35 for one book, down to €20 per book in larger packages. No printing costs, no stock. Every package is on Pricing facts.
- Your KDP edition may stay. Keep print and Kindle in your own account with Expanded Distribution switched off; ShelfPublisher adds the publisher's edition.
